Syria has been ranked the fifth most desirable country to visit for 2009 in the annual Wanderlust Travel Awards. The awards, announced by the UK-based adventure travel magazine Wanderlust on March 2, also rated Damascus as the sixth most popular city... in the magazine’s Top 10 Cities award.It is the first ever top 10 placing for Syria in the awards, reflecting a surge in interest in the country among global travellers.
Syria was also recently listed in the Los Angeles Times newspaper as a top 10 ‘must-see’ spot for 2009.Wanderlust bills itself as “the UK’s leading travel magazine for independent-minded and adventurous travellers”. The awards are based on travellers’ feedback from September 2007 to November 2008.
